Maybe Stephen Strasburg throws too many strikes. Huh? It takes once-in-a-generation talent to draw once-in-a-blue-moon criticism, but about the only thing to parse from the 21-year-old rookie's first loss is that he had the audacity to throw strikes on 0-2 counts to back-to-back batters in the fifth inning.

Stephen Strasburg struck out nine batters and allowed one run over six innings, but also suffered his first major league defeat as the Washington Nationals lost 1-0 to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. On the last better he faced, Strasburg (2-1) got his 41st strikeout. That broke a record held by Herb Score, who fanned 40 in his first four major league starts for Cleveland in 1955.

The Washington Nationals have sent left-hander John Lannan to Double-A Harrisburg, a demotion for their pitcher who started on opening day. Lannan was 2-5 with a 5.76 ERA in 14 starts. He didn't get out of the fifth inning in any of his last three starts, giving up at least 10 hits and five runs in each outing.
