Stephen Strasburg will have surgery on his pitching elbow Friday, according to MLB.com. The procedure, commonly known as Tommy John surgery, will be performed in Los Angeles by specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum. Strasburg, the heralded rookie right-hander for the Washington Nationals, will likely be lost through the 2011 season. Recovery time is a minimum 12 months but could be 18 months. The immediate downside for the Nationals is the long-term absence of their top prospect.
